45th - Activities and News

The following is taken from an e-mail Newsletter sent out on 15th January 2009

Hi

beaverwings 002.jpgMany thanks to David White for taking a great first session for the Aviation Badge. The second and final session will be on Wednesday 21st January. Beavers should have painted their toy wooden glider by this time. We will try to get their picture in the local paper- so please bring along as many of these glides as possible. Also, to get their badge, they should mention a plane and say two interesting facts about it.

I know that all my beavers now understand the principle of lift induced by airflow over an asymmetric curved surface.

District Commissioner, David McCallum was very enthusiastic about our colony last night. He said many very encouraging things. There will be some more monies available from both the UK and Scottish central scout funds- this will help buy some toys and games.

Many thanks to both David’s.

We now have 2 St Columba’s pupils helping us for the purposes of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme (Eilidh Hart and Stuart Bell). There may be more pupils to come.

Holidays

We will NOT be meeting on the 18th and 25th February for the variable half term holidays taking place. As ever, Inverclyde is quite out of step with the rest of sane society regarding school holidays.

Our last meeting will be 1/4/09 before Easter and we shall resume on 29th April.

We shall not meet on 27th May for school holiday reasons as well.

Our last meeting before summer will be 17/6/09.

Overnight Camp

DC McCallum was very keen to set up an overnight camp some time after the clocks change. Under 6s would need an accompanying parent. I will explore Quarriers to see if we can use the Summerville Weir Hall. If not, I will see if the Guide camp at South Newton is suitable. Games, large screen DVD projector, camp fire songs and sleeping bags in indoor tents. Watch this space. If at Summerville Weir hall, we will ask the restaurant, Crail Bruich, to do simple food for us in the evening. If nice weather, we can have some outdoor activities.

If successful, we might think about a ‘proper’ camp for the older ones. The district provides great help and we might approach the Kilmacolm colony to combine forces.

Investiture

It was good to see our 2 new beavers have a great time tonight- Lucy and Rocco. I plan to invest them on 11/2/09.

New Badges/Neckies

We now have our new name strip label badge. This goes on the right arm above the scout’s embroidered logo already present on the uniform. The next badge down should be the St Andrews Cross, and then the new Greenock District badge goes lowest. The patrol badges and sixer/seconder badges go further below these (down to the wrist by now).

I handed out six of our proper 45th Greenock neckerchiefs - I have 4 left with another 12 available to pick up at Greenock HQ. These can go to any invested beaver who doesn’t have one. Please can I have back the temporary neckies as these have to be returned (washed and ironed) to Deputy Chief Scout Graham Haddock.

On the 21st January, we finish off their wings and do some craft for Burns Night. On the 28th January we celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Regards

Martin Buchan
