Martin Buchan Distrct Commissioner

West Region Scout Council is delighted to confirm the appointment of Dr. Martin Buchan as the new District Commissioner for Greenock & District.

As District Commissioner, Martin will provide strategic leadership across groups and units in the Inverclyde local authority area. This is the largest District in West Region, based on Group, Volunteer and numbers of young people. It is a diverse District covering major towns as well as rural and village communities, each with their own unique opportunities and challenges.

Martin was introduced to Scouting in Stirling and has fond memories of camps at Barrwood. He studied medicine at Glasgow University, graduating in 1990 and subsequently training in Greater London and the Channel Islands before moving to Inverclyde Royal Hospital in 2005 as Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon.

At the instigation of Graham Haddock, former Scottish Chief Commissioner, Martin and his wife Jennifer re-joined scouting in 2008 and set up a Beaver section of the 45th Greenock & District Scouts in Quarrier’s Village. That was the beginning of a now thriving group of Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts along with the James Arthur Explorer Scouts in the village.

Martin has served as GSL and AGSL of the group, is a member of Scouts Scotland Active Support Team, the medical team for the Blair Atholl International Scout Jamborette, and is proud to support both the Gang Show and Everton Scout Camp in the District.

Scouts Scotland Chief Commissioner Andrew Sharkey, who is acting as West Region Scouts Regional Commissioner said: “It gives me great pleasure to welcome Martin to this important role covering Greenock and District.

“Scouting is facing one of the toughest challenges of its history and I am confident that Martin will be a strong and inspirational leader for the District as we navigate these difficult times of Covid-impacted activities. I look forward to working with him.”

Martin said: “This has been a challenging year, but for me there has also been time and opportunity to discuss with our young people and our leaders, what we would like to achieve within our district and beyond.

“Greenock is a Scouting district with an abundance of resources, talent and potential, and I, and my team, intend to help make the most of that for everyone. I would like to thank Peter Bennett who has been Acting District Commissioner over the last 11 months for his effort and guidance in these difficult times.”

Martin has made some key appointments to his District team with the addition of two Deputy District Commissioners.

David Nawrath who has been Scout Leader of the 42nd Group based in Kilmacolm will be responsible for developing water activities in the District. This is an area he has already been very involved in within the District and Lochgoilhead Activity Camp.

Andy Yarr, Scout Leader of the 85th Group based in Inverkip and Wemyss Bay, will be responsible for People in the District. He is well known, particularly for setting up innovative activities in the District
