Centenary Civic Reception

Greenock District Scout Association was honoured by Inverclyde Council, who held a Civic Reception on Wednesday 21st March 2007 to mark the Centenary of Scouting.

60 members of the movement locally were invited to the Grand Corridor at the Municipal Buildings, to enjoy an evening hosted by the Provost, his wife and elected members of the Council.

A tribute was given to Scouting by Provost Rebecchi, followed by the presentation of an inscribed vase to District Commissioner David McCallum.

The District Commissioner replied on behalf of the Scout Association, thanking firstly the Provost and his wife Diane for the interest they have shown in Scouting over the past 4 years, and thereafter they were both presented with the Scout Associations ‘Thanks Badge’. A further presentation of a print and crystal was made by the DC to Inverclyde Council, again by way of thanks in respect of the continued support the Council has given over many years.

Two of Scoutings senior members, Iris Canning and Margaret Bell, were presented by the DC, on behalf of the Chief Scout, with the prestigious Silver Acorn for ‘specially distinguished service’ over many years. Iris has been a leader for 38 years and Margaret 50 years. Both will be attending the Royal Review at Windsor Castle on 23rd April, where they will be presented to Her Majesty the Queen.

The remainder of the evening consisted of a meal, group photographs and time for old friends to catch up. Six former District Commissioners, whose joint years of Service to the movement are in excess of 250 years, were in attendance.

Entertainment was provided by Explorer Scouts Johanna Platt (59th) and Ian McGregor (70th), who played a selection of melodies throughout the evening, finishing with ‘These are the times’. All of the guests joined in singing this ‘Anthem’, bringing a memorable end to the evening.

Greenock District Scouts are grateful to the Provost and Inverclyde Council for honouring Scouting in this way.
